Hopi Kachina Dolls – 1960’s
Aholi Kachina (Circa 1960)
This one is the Aholi Kachina, according to Hopi Kachina Dolls by Harold Colton. You don’t see many of these dolls and I have never had one before. This guy is huge. He stands 15 1/2 inches tall to the top of his head and if it had a feather it would be about 17 inches. I would date him to the 60s for sure. The patina, overall appearance and so on point to this. He has yarn around his ears, which was common in the 70s, but you also see that in some dolls from the 50s. His cape is made of canvas and is painted with various Hopi design elements appropriate for this being. He carries a planting stick in his right hand and what appears to be a rasp in his left. He is in nearly excellent condition.
Avatshoya – Corn Boy Kachina (1960’s)
Avatshoya or Corn Boy Variant is circa 1960. This doll stands 7 1/2 inches tall excluding the feathers. Nice flower motif on the kilt. Has an original price tag of $10.00 attached to his left arm. He held something in both hands at some point in time but they’re long gone.
Deer Kachina (Circa 1960’s)
This is a 9 1/2 inch Deer Kachina vintage 1960’s. He is holding a rattle in the right hand and I’m not sure what’s in the left. Actually a very nice doll however his head-piece has a small repair and two of his antlers are broken off. I still think it’s a great doll.
Hemis Kachina – Circa 1960’s
This Hemis Kachina was carved by the prolific carver Emory Pohouma during the 1960’s. The doll is about 16 inches tall and in excellent condition.
Hemis Kachina (1960‘s – 1970’s)
This is an outstanding doll probably from the late 60’s or perhaps early 70’s. This 12 inch doll has great patina. The doll has had a repair done to the right corner of the tablet however is not noticeable other than the feather is different than the other feathers used on the doll. Also on the back of the head there is a corn like ornament or wand that seems to have a small piece broken off the end. It’s not really visible because its behind all the feathers. I purchased the doll from a well-respected Kachina dealer and he said the one peculiarity of this doll is that he’s wearing a females manta or robe.
Navan Kachina – Velvet Shirt (1960’s)
Navan (Velvet Shirt) Kachina. Circa 1960, 13 Inches Tall. Has stylized flowers on the top of his head with lots of detail painted on his moccasins and sash. Neat Bow with something broken off in his right hand. Great Patina!
Navan Kachina – Velvet Shirt (1960’s)
This Navan Kachina measures 12 1/2 Inches tall and is a real good one. The feathers on the top of the doll are worn and he has that large doll presence. It looks like his arms have been re-glued at the elbow at some point in time but you can’t notice as the repairs are under his shirt. He dates from the 1960’s.
Nuvak-china – Snow Kachina (1960’s)
This large 9 inch doll has Dec 25 1961 pencilled in on the bottom of one boot. The other boot has the name Olive Deholts? pencilled in.
Palik Mana – Grinding Corn (1960’s)
This is a really nice Palik Mana kneeling and grinding corn. I’m not much into the “action” dolls but this one, for me, is an exception. She is 9 1/2 Inches to the top of the tableta and is is nicely carved and in great shape.
Palik Mana – Standing (1960’s)
This is a great doll standing just over 11 inches tall. She is nicely carved and is aging well.
San Juan Koshare (1960’s)
This doll was carved at the San Juan Pueblo and is marked as a Koshare (Clown). It stands 8 1/2 Inches top to bottom. An usual looking dolls that fits in well with the collection.
